泰戈尔是印度著名的墨客、哲学家、艺术家、社会活动家，1913年获诺贝尔文学奖，是亚洲得到诺贝尔文学奖的第一人。
他生平共写了50多部诗集，12部中长篇小说，100多篇短篇小说，20多部剧本及大量文学、哲学、政治论著，代表作有《吉檀迦利》、《飞鸟集》和《月牙集》等。
即便有人没有读过他的作品，该当也能诵读个中的诗句，尤其那句最著名的“生如夏花之残酷，去世如秋叶之静美”。

泰戈尔作为一代宗师，兼容并蓄，领悟了东西方文化，其诗不仅富有韵律美感，而且饱含深刻的哲学和宗教的思想。即便是一个成年人，阅读他的诗也要悉心揣摩，体会个中的寓意。
《飞鸟集》朴实无华，但言语幽美，有的诗句，作者像是不经意间吟诵了一首小诗，但字字珠玑，蕴含着深刻的道理，不由得让你我陷入沉思。
举例来说，“鸟儿愿为一朵云，云儿愿为一只鸟”。The bird wishes it were a cloud. The cloud wishes it were a bird. 和钱钟书的《围城》是不是有异曲同工之妙？“城外的人想见来，城里的人想出去”。
诗歌的翻译历来是件难事，无论是中译英还是英译中。许多中文古诗翻译成英文后只剩下了“骨架”，诗的“魂”没有了，英文诗歌也一样。

泰戈尔热爱生命与自然，始终不懈地追求爱与美、和平与自由。《飞鸟集》中也有许多诗句，只管不是什么警言醒句，但在用朴拙的情绪歌颂自然，摘录如下。
